Coding Workshop - Year 5

Date: 13th Nov 2018 @ 8:08am

On Friday the 19th of October, I joined Year 5 on a Coding Workshop at the library to celebrate European Coding Week. This was a treat for the school, as our school had the most pupils taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge out of all Alsager schools.

The children really enjoyed the opportunity to do some hands-on coding. They worked in teams of two to programme a Micro:bit to show emojis and then digitally designed a paper robot, which was printed off and assembled. They could then have their Micro:bit put inside, to give it some character. The pupils were very good at working together to share ideas and taking turns. The Micro:bits are available to borrow (at no cost) from the library and the children were encouraged to do this, so they could further enjoy coding at home. It was interesting to see that some of the pupils had already taken part in out of school coding activities.

It was a great opportunity to catch up with my Cohort and also to get to know Mrs Beale better. The behaviour of the children was very good and they were all very engaged with the activities. I saw some great teamwork. There is a nice atmosphere within the Cohort and between pupils and teacher and I am looking forward to my next visit to Year 5.
