‘Nurturing Individual Excellence’

Stockley Farm - 16th May 2018

Date: 22nd May 2018 @ 2:16pm

Last week I had the pleasure of accompanying Reception on their class trip to Stockley Farm to support their current learning all about animals.

There was an air of excitement on the coach on the way as the children chatted about what they might see and do at the farm. The children had been looking at some photographs of past reception classes who had visited the farm so already knew quite a lot about it.

When we arrived we were greeted by Lorna who works at Stockley Farm and was our host for the day.

Our first activity was bottle feeding two very cheeky baby goats, which the children all knew were called kids. All the children got to do this and there was huge excitement when the goats continued to leap on and off the bales of hay.

Next was a very bumpy tractor trailer ride which took us to the woods so that we could enjoy a nature trail. The children loved looking for mini beasts hidden in the bug hotels along the trail. Whilst on the tractor trailer ride, the children sang two fabulous renditions of “Old Macdonald” and the “Wheels on the Tractor.”

Next stop was lunch, as there were lots of hungry tummies following the nature trail.

Following lunch we visited the large animal barn, where the children saw calves, sheep, lambs, goats, kids, piglets and fed a very hungry pig who was trying to climb over the wall!

We then visited the small animal area and stroked rabbits, a ferret and a rat! The children then got to groom Smokey the Stockley Farm pony. Time for handwashing, followed by a delicious ice cream, which seemed to disappear in seconds.

Our last activity was a visit to the reptile house, where the children got to handle an African pygmy hedgehog, a bearded dragon and a tortoise.

At the end of the day, the children gave Lorna a very special rollercoaster clap to thank her for showing them around the farm. Lorna said how exuberant the children were and that she would remember Excalibur for all the right reasons. The children had a real hands on experience on their wonderful visit to Stockely Farm. Thank you reception class for letting me be part of such a fantastic day.
