‘Nurturing Individual Excellence’

Friday 12th June 2020

It's Friday already!  I hope you have had a super week of learning and have some fun activities planned for the weekend.  I'm going to be building a big run in my back garden for our chickens so fingers crossed all goes to plan.

Humanities Extra (Mrs Harris)

I have put this first as there is an event (link below) scheduled for today at 10.30am based on volcanoes. Next week, you will be learning about volcanoes in humanities and this will fit in really well with the lesson.

From violent eruptions to spectacular lava flows, volcanoes can be found all around the world and there are many different types.
But what causes one volcano to explode, and another to erupt gently? How do they form and why are they found in certain places? Is it possible to work out when a volcano will erupt? Meet Museum researcher Gerallt Hughes to find out what it is like to study and explore a volcano.

Hang out with the Nature Live Online team this Friday (12th) at 10.30am for an interactive talk about volcanoes.

This event is free to watch on our website: https://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit/exhibitions/nature-live.html

Nature Live Online also contains lots of videos from previous live events, on subjects such as climate change, the oceans and its corals and plastic pollution.

Maths

Mental Maths: Follow the link to a game called Fraction Beach.

Choose an item on the beach then write the numerator and denominator to say how many of the item there are and how many it is out of.

LO: Understanding angles

Read through the maths PowerPoint, slides 15 - 20.  This lesson focuses on mastering what we have learnt so far in our unit of angles.  Choose from a 1, 2 or 3 star activity then check your answers.

English

We can use brackets, dashes and commas to show parenthesis in our writing.  Have a look at examples of this on the English activity sheet.  Can you have a go at writing sentences containing parenthesis for your own leaflet?

Start to think about what might be included in your leaflet.  How would you draw people into booking a holiday on Kensuke's Island? Look at the English PowerPoint to help.

Science

Our new science topic is Properties and Changes of Materials. Different materials have different properties.  A property is what a material is like.  For example, whether it is hard or soft, whether it is transparent or if it dissolves in water.  Read through the PowerPoint attached and work through the activities.  You may need a dictionary/online dictionary for the first activity.
