‘Nurturing Individual Excellence’

Friday 5th March 2021

Good morning, Year 5.

It's the end of the week!  I hope you have had a great week and are looking forward to a restful weekend ready for school on Monday.  As always, you have been absolute stars. Below is a link which takes you to a story about returning to school that I thought you might like to watch.

Maths

You can join me on Teams for this session at 9 am.

Mental Maths (20 minutes)

Today, continue to work on your 7x tables.  To test your own knowledge, follow the link to Hit the Button.  Choose Times Tables, 7x tables and spend 5 minutes here.  After, go to Division Facts, divide by 7 This will test your knowledge of inverse questions.  You could always ask someone at home to test your knowledge as well.

LO (40 minutes)

Adding and subtracting fractions

Today, we are going to use our knowledge of adding and subtracting to complete word problems and reasoning and problem solving questions.  You will need to think about all the learning from over the past two weeks: adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers plus converting improper fractions to mixed numbers as well as simplifying fractions.  You can choose from a *, ** or *** activity.  When you have completed your chosen activity, have a go at the challenge questions.  Always ensure that you check your answers and work through any that you have got incorrect.

English

You can join me on Teams at 10:30 for this session.

Spellings (20 minutes)

Today would have been your spelling test at school.  Could you ask someone at home to test you on your spellings (words with the suffix -ate).  Don't forget to remind them to add on our WOTW (below).  I'd love to know how you get on.  Maybe you could tell me your score on Seesaw?

WOTW: thorough, sufficient, signature, equip

Writing Task (45 minutes)

Today, I would like you to complete your writing - Journey to Druid's Bottom.  This should be the final paragraph which retells the part of the story where the children hear a strange noise as they are walking through the tunnel of yew trees so they run all the way to the house and barge through the door.  If you need a reminder of this part of the story, it is the final three pages of Chapter 4.   Once you have completed your story, please reread through all of your writing.  Do a final check on spellings, grammar and punctuation.  Have you been able to tick off all of the features on your checklist?  If not, go back and see if you can add them in anywhere.

DT/Art

There are two tasks that you can choose from today.  You may want to try to make a Staffordshire Lobby/vegetable stew.  Whether you are following my recipe or your own, make sure that you use any equipment (especially sharp knives) carefully.  Ask a grown up to show you how to cut without getting your fingers in the way! Did you research a Staffordshire Lobby before half term?  Why did people make them?

If you are unable to make a lobby/stew, that's fine.  You can choose from one of the following:

  • Visit the Oak Academy art page and choose an area of art that interests you.  You may need resources so click on the lesson plan first to see if you have what the lesson requires.

  • Visit YouTube and search for 'Art for Kids Hub'.  Scroll through and choose something that you would like to practise drawing.  You will only need coloured pens, paper and a pencil for this.
