Task: Carry out fieldwork to collect data

  • Fieldwork is the name given to the process of collecting data outside of a laboratory and is often used for geography-linked careers, such as geologists (those who study earth processes) or anthropology (those who study human behaviour).
  • Select one of the fieldwork activities below:
    • Traffic Survey
      • Over a set time period, record the vehicles that pass your house. Tally these in different categories, such as lorries, cars, delivery vehicles, motorbikes, buses and vans.
      • Repeat this process at a different time. For example, you could carry out the observation during the week and then again at a weekend.
      • Write a paragrapg to explain your findings
      • You may use the Traffic Survey Tally Chart below to record the data.
    • Wildlife Survey
      • Keep a notebook by your window for a whole day (or time period of your choice) and write an animal log.
      • Record all the wildlife you see and what it does.
      • Write a paragraph to explain your findings.
