‘Nurturing Individual Excellence’

Thursday 30th April 2020

Good morning, Year 5. I can't believe it's the last day of April today.  The weeks are flying by.  I hope everyone is happy, safe and well.  I'm missing you all and hope we can return to normal soon.

Below is our learning for today.

Maths

Mental maths: If you go to Hit the Button and click on square numbers, you can revise all square numbers up to 144.  Remember, for mental maths, you can also play on TTRS or Prodigy.

LO: Adding decimals with a different number of decimal places

So, today, if you visit the following linkhttps://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/, have a look at Lesson 3 (under week 2, w/c 27th April) - Adding decimals with a different number of decimal places. Check out the online teaching video and have a go at the activities. Remember to line up your digits and decimal points when completing a column addition.

English

Our next piece of writing will be based on Kensuke's Kingdom.  (Please let me know - via the school email - if you haven't been ablt to find a copy of the book or cannot access the online slide share https://www.slideshare.net/ArsalAhmed4/kensukes-kingdom-64280180). This has got to be one of my favourite books ever so I really hope you enjoy it too.  Our writing will be a balance argument - Should Michael's family sail around the world?

Your first task will be to think about the pros and cons of sailing around the world. Use the activity sheet to help.  (On page two, I have suggested some pros and cons if you are struggling).

Your second task today will be to read through the PowerPoint on modal verbs.  Can you remember what a modal verb is?  They're really useful "helper" verbs that you can use in balanced arguments.  After, choose from a 1, 2 or 3 star activity to complete.

Art

To complete our art project based upon Tiger in a Tropical Storm, it is now time for you to create your own full piece of work in the style of Henri Rousseau.  You must stick to a rainforest theme but your piece can be of anything.  It could just be leaves; it could contain an animal; or it could contain both.  You can complete this in any media (although, if possible, no felt-tips please).  You could collage your picture, use different media, the choice is yours!

This might take you a couple of sessions to complete.  It'd be better to take your time.  Remember skills that you have learnt over the year that will help - in particular, sketching!
