Times Tables
As you may be aware, from the 2019/20 academic year onwards, schools in England will be required to administer an online multiplication tables check (MTC) to Year 4 pupils. The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will also help schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided. Excalibur recognises the importance of our children having a sound and rapid recall of their tables. We believe that this knowledge supports children’s ability to solve more complex mathematical calculations more quickly, freeing up working memory.
The National expectations are as follows:
Year 1: counting forwards and backwards in ones. Counting forwards in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
Year 2: Learning 2, 5 and 10 x tables and counting forwards and backwards in 3’s
Year 3: Learning 3, 4 and 8 x tables, while counting in multiples of 50 and 100
Year 4: Learning 6, 7, 9 and 11 x tables as well as consolidating the other tables learned in Years 2 and 3.
Years 5 and 6: Consolidation of all times tables to 12 x 12
