‘Nurturing Individual Excellence’

Friday 8th January 2021

It's Friday already!!

Year 5, you truly are fabulous. You have worked amazingly well this week given that school was closed so suddenly.  Thanks to everyone for joining me on Teams (I haven't felt lonely at all this week!) and uploading work or comments on Seesaw.  After completing your work today, take a well-deserved rest and have a lovely weekend.  (Fingers crossed for more snow!)

Maths

Maths  (You can join me on Teams for this lesson - 9:00 - 10 am)

Mental Maths: We are continuing to focus upon counting forwards and backwards through zero.

If the weather during the night was -12° and rose by 4°, what is the new temperature?

At 6 pm, the temperature was 6°.  By 8 pm, it decreased by 13°.  What is the new temperature?

What is the difference between the following temperatures?

  • -8 and 2
  • -15 and -3
  • -11 and -23
  • -9 and 6

LO: Square and cube numbers

Today, we are going to continue with our work on square and cube numbers.    If you are not able to join me on Teams, please view the PowerPoint attached.

For your work today, there are two reasoning and problem solving worksheets.  One is for work on square numbers and the other is cube numbers.  Choose from either a one, two or three star sheet and complete the left hand column for each worksheet.  So, for example, if you choose to complete one star, you would answer questions 1a, 2a and 3a on both sheets and leave 1b, 2b and 3b.  Of course, if you would like to complete more questions, then great! The answers are at the bottom of each document.

English  (Today, you can join me on Teams to discuss the final paragraph for your letter and also for the next chapter of Kensuke's Kingdom.)

Spellings: Today would have been your spelling test at school.  Could you ask someone at home to test you on your spellings - words with the suffix -ness.  Don't forget to remind them to add on our WOTW (below).  I'd love to know how you get on.  Maybe you could tell me your score on Seesaw?

WOTW: vehicle, frequency, curiosity, queue

Writing

Today, concentrate upon writing paragraph 4 and the ending of your letter - how you intend to be rescued and an emotional ending.  Use your planning sheet to help. Once again,  think about the writing process.  Draft, edit, check for spellings, punctuation and grammar.

To help, have a look at how I have ended my letter by viewing my WAGOLL.  This should give you some ideas.  I wonder who can add brackets or dashes? A semi-colon? A rhetorical question?

Art

Today, we will be looking at an artist called Frida Kahlo.  Please read through the PowerPoint to find out about her. Using the PowerPoint, or your own research, can you create a fact file about this remarkable artist.
