Planning Progression
Computing at Excalibur
At Excalibur, our Computing curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital world. We follow the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) scheme from Year 1 upwards, providing a comprehensive and engaging framework that develops pupils’ computational thinking, programming abilities, and digital literacy progressively through Key Stages 1 and 2.
In Reception, children begin their computing journey with Barefoot Computing, which introduces fundamental concepts through playful, unplugged activities that build a strong foundation in computational thinking before moving on to screen-based tasks.
To ensure our pupils develop a strong foundation in online safety, we incorporate Project Evolve as a starting task in every lesson. This consistent focus on digital wellbeing helps children understand how to navigate the online world responsibly and confidently, protecting themselves and others while using technology.
Purpose of Study
Computing at Excalibur goes beyond learning how to use devices. It aims to foster a deeper understanding of how technology works and how it can be harnessed creatively and responsibly. Our curriculum encourages pupils to think logically and solve problems, equipping them with critical skills that are vital for success in education and future careers. Through practical activities and projects, children learn how to design, code, and communicate using digital tools, while also becoming aware of the ethical, social, and safety issues surrounding technology.
Aims
Our Computing curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
-
Develop a solid understanding of computational thinking, including decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithms.
-
Build confidence and competence in programming using age-appropriate languages and software, enabling them to create their own digital solutions and animations.
-
Gain digital literacy skills necessary to use technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly in a variety of contexts.
-
Understand the importance of online safety and digital wellbeing, reinforced through Project Evolve activities that are embedded in every lesson.
-
Learn to collect, organise, and analyse data effectively using digital tools.
-
Explore how technology impacts the world around them, fostering awareness of both opportunities and challenges.
-
Develop problem-solving and collaboration skills through group projects and individual tasks, encouraging creativity and perseverance.
Our Computing curriculum fully aligns with the National Curriculum for Computing, ensuring that pupils are prepared for the demands of the digital age and develop lifelong skills that extend beyond the classroom.
