Describing how things studied from the past affect and influence things today

Task 1: Watch A Trip to the Moon and make notes.

  • Originally called Voyage Dans la Lune, A Trip to the Moon is widely considered the first science fiction film. It was directed by Georges Melies.
  • Watch the film by clicking on the link below:
  • As you watch the film, write down notes to answer the following:
    • How does the film start?
    • How does the film end?
    • Summarise the story.
    • What characters are there in the film?
    • What do the characters do?

Task 2: Consider how A Trip to the Moon has influenced films today

  • Think about films which you have seen and write how they are similar to A Trip to the Moon.
  • Use your notes as a starting point.
  • For example:
    • A Trip to the Moon focusses on a group of scientists who prepare to travel to the Moon to find out if anything lives there. They find that it is inhabited. This is similar to a recent Netflix film called Over the Moon - in this film, the main character creates a rocket in order to get to the Moon. On arrival, she finds that it is also inhabited.
  • You may present your work creatively, such as in the form of a PowerPoint or poster.

Task 3: Comment on the visual effects

  • Rewatch A Trip to the Moon and, while you are watching, write down all of the different visual effects you see. A visual effect is anything that has been done to make the image appear different that it would do if you were there in person, such as the camera zooming in, or characters appearing and disappearing.

Task 4: Consider how these effects have influenced films today

  • Think about films that you have seen that you think have similarities to A Trip to the Moon.
  • Write how some more modern films use similar effects. Use your notes as a starting point.
  • For example:
    • In A Trip to the Moon, Georges Melies has used an effect which makes it look like a character disappears. This is used a lot in modern films, including in the Harry Potter films when the characters put on the invisibility cloak.
