‘Nurturing Individual Excellence’

Tuesday 5th May 2020

Good morning, Year 5.  Once again, it was lovely to speak to some of you yesterday.  I'm glad you are all safe and well.  I'm still making my way through everyone so don't worry if I haven't called you yet or if you have missed my call.

Maths

Mental maths: Try to spend around 10 - 15 minutes improving/practising an area of mental maths.  My favourites online games are TTRS and Hit the Button.

LO: To calculate the perimeter by finding the missing sides.

Please view the attached PowerPoint then choose an activity to complete. Page 2 is one star, page 3 is two star and page 4 is three star.

English

Today, we are going to practise writing sentences for our balanced argument, thinking about arguments for and against Michael sailing around the world.  Have a look at the Word document (Sentences for our Balanced Argument) and below. It gives an example of how to structure a sentence for an argument.

Connectivegeneralised speakerlanguage of debate make the point extend and explain the point

Eg. Firstly, some people argue that this experience could greatly benefit Michael’s education as there will be opportunities to learn new languages.

You will see that the sentence starts with a connective followed by the generalised speaker (which hides whoever made the point), followed by language of debate, followed by the point to be made with an extension of the point.

Use the word bank to help you create your own sentences, using your pros and cons sheet (from yesterday) for your arguments for and against.

Computing (Mrs Harris)

Hello everyone. I hope you are all safe and well. In Computing this week, we're going to look at using Excel spreadsheets to solve problems. The PowerPoint goes through how to do this. You will need the 'Activity Sheet Pocket Money Problem' and the Excel Spreadsheet 'Pocket Money Problem' to be able to complete this lesson. I hope you enjoy it.

Humanities (Mrs Harris)

Yesterday we were introduced to our new topic 'Kensuke's Kingdom', and we looked at the places Michael visited on the Peggy Sue. Today is a research task, looking further into the countries Michael visited.
