‘Nurturing Individual Excellence’

Wednesday 13th May 2020

Good morning, Year 5.  We're nearly half way though the week already! Well done to all who have been busy reading on Epic!  I can see that lots of you have! Some of you might just be choosing to read paper books instead and that's fine! Either way, I hope you're enjoying reading! I can also see that a few of you have been on Prodigy.  Tilda, Claudia and Harrison are at the top of the leaderboard at the moment so well done!

Maths

Mental Maths: Follow the link to Top Marks Daily 10.  Choose level 5 or 6, then rounding.  Have a go at rounding to different amounts to practise your skills.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

LO: Converting units of measure.

Look throught the PowerPoint attached, recapping on converting kilometres and kilograms, then have a go at the 1, 2 or 3 star activities (adobe sheets). Remember the first sheet is the easiest.

English

Today, we will be focussing on the last two paragraphs (paragraph 3 and 4) of our balanced argument.  Paragraph 3 will be an opposing paragraph.  This means all the reasons that Michael's family should not travel around the world.  Again, think of 2 - 3 reasons as to why they shouldn't and try to expand and explain each point you make.  Have a look at my WAGOLL to help.  Remember to link your ideas with connectives; use the generalised speaker; use language of debate; and use modal verbs.  E.g.

However, some people acknowledge that travelling around the world on the Peggy Sue could be dangerous for these amateur sailors because the family (even though they have received six months of training) have only ever sailed on lakes or reservoirs.

Your final paragraph should try to round the argument up.  Here, you could put your own opinion about whether the family should embark upon this journey.  You could also include rhetorical questions to get you reader to think about the proposed arguments.  Again, read through my WAGOLL for ideas.
