Science Experiment - Materials

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 1 Year: 2015 - 2016

Today Year 1 and 2 experimented with what materials burn and what don't. As year 2's topic this term is The Great Fire of London, they have been learning that the the fire spread so quickly because the houses were made of wood. The teachers set up the experiment and with a pile of wood, a line of bricks and another pile of wood.

When we were all outside we asked the children what they thought would happen.

"I think that the wood is flameable but the bricks are not"

" I think that the wood will burn and crackle"

Mrs Woodcock then set a fire under one of the piles of wood and next to the line of bricks. The children watched as the wood burn't but the flames did not set the bricks on fire and did not allow the fire to spread to the second pile of wood.

After the fire went out and everything had cooled down the children were allowed to touch and feel the burnt sticks, the blackened bricks and the ashes.

We all had a brilliant outside science lesson as you can see from the photographs below.
