‘Nurturing Individual Excellence’

Planning Progression

RE

INTENT

At Excalibur Primary School, we provide a broad and balanced RE curriculum that promotes their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Our pupils are given the opportunity to explore the religions and worldviews that shape society today and reflect upon their own worldviews.

We want our pupils to:

  • Know and understand a range of religions and worldviews;
  • Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and worldviews;
  • Gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and worldviews.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Excalibur Primary School, RE is taught to all age groups weekly.

We use Kapow’s Religion and Worldviews scheme to support the high quality teaching of RE. In each unit of work, children build their responses towards answering a ‘big question’.

We teach a spiral curriculum model where the children develop their substantive, personal and disciplinary knowledge progressively to increasing depth each academic year. By returning to key concepts each year, the children have the opportunity to build upon their prior knowledge.

The worldviews that we cover are:

  • Christianity
  • Judaism
  • Islam
  • Hinduism
  • Sikhism
  • Buddhism
  • Humanism

IMPACT

The teaching of RE and worldviews at Excalibur Primary School is assessed summatively at the end of each unit and formatively throughout the lessons. Summative assessment is measured against the key knowledge that children are expected to learn, as detailed in the medium term plan.

The progression of children’s learning is showcased through class reflection books where high quality work and the children’s insights are recorded.
